Hello, we're APOPO-WE TRAIN RATS TO SAVE LIVES.

APOPO is a global non-profit organization registered in Belgium that has developed an innovative method using African giant pouched rats, nicknamed “HeroRATs”, to detect landmines and tuberculosis using their extraordinary sense of smell. APOPO’s training and research center is based in Tanzania. We focus on: -Mine Clearance: APOPO’s HeroRATs are detecting landmines in Mozambique, Angola, Cambodia and soon in Zimbabwe. There are currently 56 countries suffering from the threat of landmines that pose a structural barrier to development and economic growth long after conflicts end. Thousands of innocent children and adults are injured or killed by landmines every year. Villages are cut off from basic needs such as water sources and travel routes, and cannot grow crops or graze livestock on unsafe land. Detection of these devices is difficult, dangerous, costly and time-consuming. -Tuberculosis Detection: APOPO’s HeroRATs help diagnose tuberculosis alongside 71 public clinics in Tanzania, Mozambique and in Ethiopia. Tuberculosis ranks as the world’s leading cause of death from an infectious disease. There are 10.4 million new global cases of tuberculosis per year and around 1.7 million people die from the disease. In most sub-Saharan African countries only about half of the patients with active tuberculosis are actually diagnosed by their local clinics.
