Food Insecurity Simulation Workshop

Workshop

About this experience

Will you be able to feed your family this week? An estimated 1 in 8 Americans were food insecure in 2017, equating to 40 million Americans, including more than 12 million children. This means that at some point during the year, household food consumption was disrupted or reduced because the household lacked money or resources to buy food. Hunger Free America’s hunger simulation is an interactive experience that allows participants to understand what it's like to live with food insecurity in America. Participants will take on the identity of someone struggling with food insecurity and are challenged to create a diverse and nutritious meal plan for their family while balancing the real life decisions that a person struggling with food insecurity might face. Before diving into the simulation, Hunger Free America’s staff will give participants an overview of our national nonprofit organization and an introduction to food insecurity in the United States and the social safety net programs that exist here. After the exercise, a Hunger Free America staff member will lead participants in a debrief over a boxed lunch. We will discuss impressions from the activity, issues of food access and availability in the United States, and how participants can continue to support effective solutions to ending hunger. This activity is family friendly (12+).

    Hello, we're Hunger Free America.

HUNGER FREE AMERICA (formerly known as the New York City Coalition Against Hunger) is a national nonprofit group building a nonpartisan, grass-roots membership movement to enact the policies and programs needed to end domestic hunger and ensure that all Americans have sufficient access to nutritious food. Our long-term goal is not just to ameliorate the problem, but also to build the people’s movement necessary to enact the economic and public policies needed to end hunger entirely. Given that hunger drains our economy and tears at our moral and civic fabric, we know that eliminating it will boost the nation both economically and spiritually. Towards that end, we’ve adopted the motto: “Ending hunger lifts us all." Learn more about us on our website: https://www.hungerfreeamerica.org/
