About this experience

Will you be able to feed your family this week? An estimated 1 in 8 Americans were food insecure in 2017, equating to 40 million Americans, including more than 12 million children. This means that at some point during the year, household food consumption was disrupted or reduced because the household lacked money or resources to buy food. This experience involves two parts: 1. Food Insecurity Simulation Workshop 2. SNAP Outreach in NYC Community Participants will perform SNAP Street Outreach by canvassing underserved communities and directly informing New York City residents about the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Hundreds of thousands of hungry New Yorkers are eligible for SNAP, but due to a long list of obstacles, are not currently enrolled. Prior to canvassing, Hunger Free America’s staff will give participants an overview of our national nonprofit organization and an introduction to food insecurity in the United States and the social safety net programs that exist here. Volunteers will then participate in an interactive experience that allows for a deeper understanding of what it's like to live with food insecurity in America. Participants will take on the identity of someone struggling with food insecurity and are challenged to create a diverse and nutritious meal plan for their family while balancing the real life decisions that a person struggling with food insecurity might face. Following the simulation, volunteers will go to an underserved neighborhood in NYC and give information to residents to connect them with Hunger Free America’s Benefits Access team. These HFA staff members assist low-income residents with the SNAP application process. After canvassing, Hunger Free America’s staff will lead volunteers in a discussion over a boxed meal. The discussion will include volunteer impressions from the outreach and simulation activity, diverse perspectives on addressing food insecurity, the calculated impact of their canvassing action, and issues of food access in the United States. We will also provide information on how volunteers can continue to support effective solutions to ending hunger. This activity is ideal for someone who is outgoing and friendly, comfortable talking to people they don’t know, enjoys working outside in diverse communities, and supports Hunger Free America’s mission to eliminate food insecurity. Volunteers must be 18 years old, or accompanied by someone 18 or older, and able to be outside for an extended period of time.

    Hello, we're Hunger Free America.

HUNGER FREE AMERICA (formerly known as the New York City Coalition Against Hunger) is a national nonprofit group building a nonpartisan, grass-roots membership movement to enact the policies and programs needed to end domestic hunger and ensure that all Americans have sufficient access to nutritious food. Our long-term goal is not just to ameliorate the problem, but also to build the people’s movement necessary to enact the economic and public policies needed to end hunger entirely. Given that hunger drains our economy and tears at our moral and civic fabric, we know that eliminating it will boost the nation both economically and spiritually. Towards that end, we’ve adopted the motto: “Ending hunger lifts us all." Learn more about us on our website: https://www.hungerfreeamerica.org/
