Saving & Offering food from a local Farmers’ Market

About this experience

Food waste is a global phenomenon. Be part of reducing food waste and offering surplus food to those in need. The Greek NGO Boroume sponsors a program whose goal is to collect the surplus produce at local Farmers' Markets and offers that food to charities that serve people facing food insecurity. In 2018 Boroume saved & offered more than 128 tonnes of fresh produce from Farmers’ Markets. You will be part of a team of volunteers who visit the markets at the end of their working day and collect the surplus produce from sellers who wish to donate it to charities instead of throwing it away. The produce that is collected is given to a local charity that serves people in need living in the community. For foreign volunteers, not speaking Greek is not a barrier since they are accompanied by bilingual Greek speaking volunteers. This is a fun and rewarding experience. The fun is in interacting with local sellers of produce and seeing how much produce can be saved. The reward is in seeing the surplus food go to people in need and not be wasted. You will discover the importance of fresh vegetables and fruits in Greek culture.

    Hello, we're Boroume.

Boroume ("We Can") is a non-profit organization whose mission is to reduce food waste and to fight malnutrition in Greece. We save food on a daily basis across the entire food supply chain and we offer it to charities that help people who are facing food insecurity. Our actions help the most vulnerable in our society, as well as the environment by reducing organic food waste. Since 2011 we have saved and offered more than 28.000.000 portions of food. In addition to saving & offering food, we attach great importance in behavioural change –among the general public and schoolchildren- about the issue of food waste through our awareness raising actions and our educational progamme.
